Elizabeth I, as every school student should know, was the daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. Her paternal grandfather was Henry VII.
James I of England was the great–great–grandson of Henry VII – via Margaret, his second child and eldest daughter (who married King James IV of Scotland), King James V of Scotland, and Mary, Queen of Scots. This made him Elizabeth's first cousin, twice removed downwards.
